You only need few ingredients to make this Hwachae, but the result is really fantastic! Kids also love this since it’s very fun to eat! I mean who doesn’t like floating watemelon in their punch! Having a party? You can wow your guests and show off your presentation as well! For extra sweetness and some color pop, add in some stevia leaves like I did.

    Hwache then and Hwachae now:

Hwachae is a traditional Korean punch or dessert. It can even be considered as a dessert. Hwachae is typically served in a bowl and enjoyed cold with floating fresh fruits and edible flowers. Depending on the ingredients, the name will change. This particular version is called Subak Hwachae, the literal translation is watermelon punch. There are over 20 variations to this traditional South Korea drink. Traditional versions were probably much healthier, with minimal sweetener and additives. For the modern-day versions, more sweetener is added and may include extra ingredients like carbonated drinks or dairy products. For me, this is the version that I enjoy the most. May i will share some other versions in the near future!

    Why do Koreans like Hwachae?

I grew up eating Hwachae instead of ice cream, as a little girl in Korea. I remember seeing them in parties, gatherings and picnics. It was the best way to beat the summer heat! Due to its refreshing qualities and affordability, Hwachae was considered the “It” dessert from what I recall.

How do you make Korean watermelon punch?

    1. Prepare a large bowl, a small cookie scooper, a knife and a cutting board.
    2. Take a whole fresh watermelon and slice it into half. Then place it on a counter and stabilize it.
    3. Scoop the watermelon with the cookie scooper. Use rotating motions as you scoop out round balls. (I used a one-inch cookie scooper and worked out well. You can also use the melon baller).
    4. You should have around 15-20 watermelon balls, but you can always scoop more if you like. Set aside.
    5. Use a blender to create watermelon juice with sugar.
    6. Into a medium size bowl, add the watermelon balls, watermelon juice, ginger ale and ice cubes.
    7. Serve watermelon punch in individual bowls with spoon. This is optional, but you can garnish with greens like stevia or mint leaves. Enjoy cold!

How do you consume Korean Hwachae?

Hwachae is typically served in a small bowl with a spoon on the side. It is not considered rude to drink from the bowl. And the floated fruits can be eaten with the spoon. This punch tastes the best when taken fresh. Due to the carbonated drink added, consuming within an hour is what I recommend. I don’t recommend saving the leftover unless you omit adding the carbonated drink.

How can you make this punch more refreshing?

Making this punch as cold as possible is your goal. Use more ice as needed and use carbonated drink that’s already been chilled in the fridge. If you can use watermelon that’s been chilled as well, that will be even better!

Can you use different types of carbonated drinks?

Yes, you can use drinks of your choice. I wanted to use a sparkling water, but I didn’t have any handy. I ended up using ginger ale, but it turned out just as great! Sprite or 7UP will work just as well!

    Variations to Subak Hwachae?

    • Use different fruits to float on top.
    • Use different fruit juices to mix with the watermelon.
    • Add some lemon slices on top.
    • Try different types of carbonated drink or soft drink
    • Garnish with different types of greens on top.
